As far as I know, Jack WINOLJ won't have net connectivity until he gets here late Sunday afternoon. I'll be in Somerville for the NESFA meeting when he arrives, but a surprise awaits him and since he's not on LJ, I can tell all of you what it is.

He'll arrive to find not one but two empty parking spaces in the garage! Mine, and one for him. Presuming his car fits, and All That Jazz....

Doesn't sound like a big deal, does it? Two car garages should have room to park two cars. But those who have visited Toad Woods know that I've been using the second parking space in my garage for other things ever since I moved in. It serves as the supplemental, convenient basement, especially since the unfinished area in my real basement is small. [livejournal.com profile] calimac will have the best appreciation for how much work went into creating that parking space; he saw the utter chaos that reigned most of seven weeks ago. It's as if the de-cluttering crew from Clean Sweep or one of the other messy house rescue shows came by. Only I don't have any spiff new storage cabinets along the walls, and it took me several work sessions to accomplish it on my own.

Okay, there is a pile of boxes on the stair landing that don't belong there. Some of them will go to Mark and [livejournal.com profile] nesfan to pack art. Jack may use some of them to pack glass he finds next week at Brimfield. (Short description: "The Brimfield Antiques Show is the largest outdoor antiques show in the world, with over 6,000 dealers and 130,000+ visitors during the course of the week. While it is convenient to refer to it as "The Show", it is actually comprised of 23 fields, owned by "Promoters", who lease spaces to dealers from all over the world. The Show takes place three times a year.")

The garage isn't perfect, but the results are deeply satisfying. Whoohoo!

I doubt that the parking space will remain empty for the entire summer after Jack leaves, but I do hope to be able to reclaim it with ease in time for [livejournal.com profile] fredcritter and family to park there when they visit in August. That should be a matter of tucking the lawnmower back into the not-using-it space I created for now, moving a utility chair, and perhaps taking down a work table.

Okay, that's almost certainly an understatement. Stuff will accumulate there; it's too convenient a space for it not to. But it'll be three months of stuff, not three years.

Onward!

Thanks! And thanks for helping by borrowing the drill press. You didn't see the at it's worse -- heck, you could see that there was a drill press there, which wasn't true a couple of weeks ago. But you still have a pretty good idea of how much I accomplished in clearing the rest of it out this week!

We also have surprisingly little "dead storage" in our house, because the basement is a finished gameroom and what's supposed to be the storage room is actually Leslie's bedroom.

We had more stuff in the garage until recently, but the garage is a pretty standard two-car garage, meaning there's very little extra storage space in it.

However, now that the deck is done, we've bought two plastic storage units for under the deck. One is a large coffin for ancient camping gear we may never use again but Jim is loathe to throw away. The other is a Rubbermaid-style cabinet with shelves for miscellany and gardening tools. So now there's a little more empty space in the garage.

I'm always amazed by the number of people who seem to regularly park their cars in their driveways. Despite the fact that the houses here are pretty good-sized, and most households have fewer, than, say, five members, and the basements are all finished, most people use their garages for storage and their driveways for their cars.

I've never understood that. Having a garage means that I don't have to scrape ice in the winter or burn in the summer, and that I can leave stuff in the car overnight if I'm tired when I get home. I would no sooner fill the garage with stuff and park on the driveway than I would fill the house with stuff and sleep on the lawn.

We didn't have a garage until we moved to Pittsburgh in '93. The garage in the old house was so tiny it had no storage at all. But I really agree that using a garage for your car is what you SHOULD be using it for.

I reach. You deserve a heartfelt pat on the back. I should have been there to help you, but I'm goofing around in Michigan instead. Heh.
