...but I'm still surprised that someone could be missing for 4 days just 30 feet off one of the busier roads I travel regularly.

And even though Monson is just five miles from Toad Woods, I learned about the accident on the international edition of CNN.com.

Freak situations like this one are the reason I carry my cell phone when working in my yard or tromping around my woods, which are far more remote than running off any nearby section of Hwy 32. They're also one of the reasons I recently traded in for the same model I had, with analog roam, rather than upgrading to an all-digital model. The news article reported that the guy didn't have a cell phone; it didn't mention that a cell phone might well have not done him any good, though coverage is better in Monson than it is here in Wales.

I live in the heart of a little city, but my cell phone works everywhere here, the rescue squad is a half-mile away, and the hospital is three miles away.
