Wake. Shower. Drive. Drive. Drive. Hi, [livejournal.com profile] debgeisler! Coffee, talk, talk, cherry muffins (plain for the Gavster), talk, sweet rolls! Yummmmm..... (Thanks, Deb's Mom! Thanks, Deb!) Quiche. OJ. Talk, talk, talk. Ride, ride, ride.

Note: assume more talk happening throughout. Shared sensibilities, stories, good company, good times. Many, many giggles.

See Atlantic Ocean, pick up rocks and sea-tumbled glass. Ride. Board boat. Sea air: breathe, breathe, breathe. Herring Gulls, Sooty Shearwaters, Wilson's Storm-Petrels, more sea birds. Flap, flap. Glide alongside our boat.

Whale! WhaleWhaleWhaleWhaleWhaleWhaleWhaleWhale and at least 12 more whales! The official count of our trip was 10 Humpback Whales, 10 Minke Whales, and 1 Fin Whale. It sure seemed like there were more Humpbacks. Especially near the end of our time on Stellwagen Bank, when whatever direction I looked in I'd see 1-3 whales fairly close, and another further out there and another...and another! And they all looked like humpbacks. Yes, I saw the Minkes, too. But those whales out at the edges of the fog that surrounded us? They were Way Too Big to be Minkes. And they swam like Humpbacks. Looks like a Humpback, swims like a Humpback...

At one point there were whales to the left of us, whales to the right of us, and three more whales off the stern. Much fluking. Gorgeous, big bubble circles. One humpback swam along on his back, feeding, feeding, feeding. Our boat was close enough that we looked straight down on the port side and saw his belly and the bottomside of his flippers. Beautiful glides through the water. Blow, blow, blow. Chuffle-blow. "I never get tired of that sound" says a stranger standing next to me on the boat, both of us listening closely. Indeed.

More time passes. Time is different around whales. Stretches on and on, yet is so suddenly gone. Back to land, where more fog has gathered. It's cooler, too. Odd.

Shop. Souvenir T-shirts for the WWW's. Ride, ride, ride. Ice cream!

Ride. Home, home again for Middleton values of home. More good times followed by Drive. Drive, Drive. Quick grocery stop for milk and fruit. Emerge more than a few minutes later with a $70 haul. New England milk isn't that expensive. Drive. Drive. Home, home again for Toad Woods values of home. One Wales Whale Watcher heads up to bed within 2 minutes of her arrival home; her Mom remains vertical until all of the groceries are stowed and she's confirmed her hostess doesn't need her help with anything else tonight. Say 12 minutes, maybe.

The last of the Wales Whale Watchers picks up email, reads "You call *that* sushi?", Deb's Most Excellent Post about our shared adventure. Yep, it was grand all around.

Whales!

Mr. Stokes and I have an arrangement when we are going to worldcons that we meet and do Something fun outside the con. In Boston we went whale watching, got to see some fin whales and minke whales but not as close as you alls. It also turned out to be the farthest I've ever been away from land on a boat... out of sight.

In Glasgow we rode the train to Sterling and hiked up to the village church where James I was baptized and Sterling Castle.

Wooo hoo, that was a grand whale watching trip you all had!!
