Yesterday, I picked up a new hummingbird feeder. Late last night, I boiled sugar syrup, let it cool, filled the feeder, and hung it just outside my office window. I sat down at my computer about 10 minutes ago. A hummingbird came by just a few minutes after that. Whee!

(They may well have been around sooner if I'd hung a feeder, though in the past, they've coming looking for it even when it's not there. Sometime between May 5-10 really does seem to be their arrival date here.)

I am not myself a bird fan, but I understand how somebody else might be. I think if my parents had started me on a bird recognition education campaign when I was very young, it would have worked, and been quite compatible with the person I became anyway. (The kids did have a copy of the Burgess Bird Book for Children.) I hope you attract the hummingbird and all goes well; keep us posted. (And yes, my "pretense at understanding" most emphatically counts the people who travel all over the world to see a bird they've never previously seen. I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that bird and the birds I see locally -- didn't start early enough, don't own a pair of binoculars -- but it still sounds like a whole lot of fun.)

I decided long ago that clean sugar solution was beyond me, so I have a hulled sunflower feeder. The cats and I watch the birds and I say things like "Look! That's the daddy cardinal! That's the mommy mourning dove!" but all they care about is size.

(And there's the mommy cardinal!)
