The Passing of the Winged Monkeys

Bruce Townley pointed me to this obituary for Sig Frohlich, the last of the Winged Monkeys from The Wizard of Oz. Frohlich may well have been the most memorable of the 13 monkeys, too. He snatched Toto, and also appeared in scenes with the Wicked Witch, played by Margaret Hamilton.

We're clearly not in Kansas anymore. RIP, Sig.

Just because it was inevitable that this should happen doesn't mean it doesn't make me feel sad. That's still my favorite movie (especially "If I Were King of the Forest," which might be the greatest performance of a song in a musical, Evah).

Mmm. "From now on, you'll be history." "You'll be hist-" "You'll be hist'" "You'll be history! And we will glorify your name! You will be a bust-" "Be a bust-" "Be a bust in the Hall Of Fame!"

And yet... I think as long as Ross Perot is still around, we haven't lost all of the Winged Monkeys yet. (Not to mention Harriet Miers.)

Okay, I want to see sketches of Ross Perot and Harriet Miers as Winged Monkeys! Of course for Miers you could have her at the feet of Bush, holding Hallmark Cards and saying "Cool!" or "You are the Greatest."

After receiving similar notification from Bruce plus the inclusion of other movies Sig Frohlich was in I made a mental note (which unfortunately might go the way of all my mental notes -> into the Black Hole in my brain which sucks such notes into oblivion.) to watch other movies Sig Frohlich was in but not in a Winged Monkey costume. I want to see what this fellow looks like and how tall he is. Admittedly I now know that he also did stand in work for Mickey Rooney but was taller and more handsome, at least so says the person writing the note. Now admittedly it would not be a stretch to be more handsome than Mickey Rooney since "handsome" never popped into my mind when I see him.
