The OLIVER HAZARD PERRY won't look this gigantic once she's back in the water, but she'll be even taller once the masts are raised. As Capt. Bailey said Sunday, there's still a lot to be done. But, wow, what a gorgeous tall ship she already is. She's going to be stunning once she's afloat and fulfilling her purpose as an education ship.

[livejournal.com profile] n6tqs in the engine room aboard MYSTIC. There's another shot with a gleeful expression, to be found in my fledgling Tall Ships album. More of the 102 photos I shot Sunday will be showing up there eventually. For my next trick, I'll learn how to post video so you can hear the engine room with the generators running and immediately understand why anyone entering it wears ear protection.

In short, I had a fabulously fine time Sunday thanks to Doug's fine company and guided tours of two (count 'em, 2) tall ships. Even discovered the wonders of a delicious breakfast served in a Massachusetts restaurant at Uncle Jay's Twisted Fork in Cherry Valley.(Minneapolis groks real restaurants serving breakfast. Massachusetts, not so much, so the Twisted Fork is a true win.)

Heh.

I *love* the story behind this particular SS Perry, the Smithsonian magazine covered it several months back. That it was first commissioned by a group of Canadian & British historical enthusiasts to celebrate a British victory over the Americans in the War of 1812 (if I recall correctly), only for the original group to run out of money, and then to have a group of American enthusiasts pick up the tab and rename the ship in honor a victorious American naval officer from that same war... hee hee hee!

Exactly! The hull was originally built for to be a recreation of the HMS DETROIT. It's ironic as all get out that it's now the OLIVER HAZARD PERRY. It's great fun, too, that you knew about it. I hadn't before Doug told me yesterday. Within the community, they're treading a bit delicately to avoid rubbing it in. No need to start another naval battle, eh? Better to re-enact the old ones.

Speaking of that, Doug was on board NIAGARA during last year's bicentennial re-enactment of the battle of Lake Erie.

What a great photo of Doug aboard the MYSTIC! And what fine stern windows on the OHP.
