"Calgary, whoohoo..."

Yes. I'm here. I've been here for 9 hours, and even have net connectivity again.

My checked bag isn't here, and hasn't yet been seen since it was scanned in Chicago last night. I'm really glad I borrowed a T-shirt from Kathy.

I walked into the hotel 10 minutes before I was scheduled to lead a docent tour of the art show. (I knew I was leading one; had no idea of when it was scheduled.) Good instant immersion.

I'm wiped and it's showing. With luck, a long night's sleep will restore my equilibrium.

Met a couple of really neat people; most excellent. And learned there is Ice Cider in the world. I'd previously known only about Ice Wine.

Onward!

One of the Douglas Brothers is living in Calgary, the one who played the bass. I don't think he is a fan though and suspect you won't run across him. But, it would be very cosmic if you did. :)
Hugs.

Is Ice Cider made with apples which have been left on the tree until the frost or rot has got them?

I would suspect that, at some point in it's making, it was chilled to the point that some of the water in it froze and was removed. At least that's how I'd do it if I were in charge of making Ice Cider.

The bottle didn't say, and none of us at the sweet wines party was familiar with the production process. But Google came through:

Ice Cider

A common alcoholic beverage in Canada that is made from sweeter varieties of frozen apples, such as McIntosh or Spartan. The production of ice cider, which is similar in process to the production of ice wine with frozen grapes, involves the harvesting of apples either frozen on the tree or those harvested to be frozen in order to allow the natural sugars to increase within the fruit and become concentrated. The apples are then pressed to extract the juice, which is then fermented for 6 to 12 months. The resulting flavor, very similar to an apple cider, is sweet and somewhat tart with a cool refreshing overtone. This beverage is also known as apple ice wine.

The apple flavor was strong and good; it wasn't the least sweet of the 9-10 wines we drank last night, but it was in the bottom half of the field in terms of sweetness. Interesting enough that I'd gladly drink it again, but nowhere near as good as the Samos muscat.

I'm not sure whether I'd rate our Samos Doux or John's Vin Santo as the best wine of the night - his was more balanced and perfectly aged classically, but because of that, certainly not as sweet as the Samos, which seemed to have no complaints.

I'll be posting on Calgary wine-shopping, sweets, and the post-masquerade booze-up in [livejournal.com profile] vintacon soon.
