2,000-acre fire burning in southwest Reno

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports: "450 firefighters are still fighting the 2,000-acre Caughlin Fire in southwest Reno, but Reno Fire Chief Mike Hernandez said that its forward progress has been stopped."

I'm glad there's good news. My heart and prayers are with those affected by the fire. aisb23 reported in a brief Skype chat that 20 homes burned and 10,000 people have been evacuated. The Washington Post blog adds that one person died of a heart attack while fleeing from the fire.

Both Arthur and the Washington Post blog say the fire is 400-450 acres. Arthur says there's a major windstorm in Reno right now, with 75 mph winds. That's not helping.

Kevin Standley and his wife Lisa live 28 mile NE of Reno, so they should not be directly impacted by the fire.

Lisa and travelswithkuma are safe in Fernley House, and I'm still in the Bay Area until Sunday. It's snowing in the Sierras, so I would have had to put on the tire chains to get over the top tonight; as it happens, I have to be here for an SFSFC board of directors meeting tomorrow morning, so I was not traveling today anyway, so we can't blame me for visiting Mayhem upon Reno again.

Other end of the urban area. The fire is SW; Sparks, despite its name, is NE.

Thanks for the reassurance. You were right, of course. I shot them an email, and they replied that Dan's house and business are both a long way from the fire zone. (His business is Buckbean Brewery, btw, which might be familiar to you if you live in the Reno area.)

On Sunday of Worldcon, I drove B. to mass at a church along the edge of what is now the fire zone. Many of the people we saw there that day must be evacuated from their homes right now. Our thoughts with them.

The fire is out. It burned just under 2000 acres and destroyed 29 homes.

I got an earful from my co-worker this morning about trying to evacuate his two kids and pets at 2:00 am alone because his wife was on the other side of the state for work.
