Rent-a-Fort
Mar. 31st, 2011 02:33 pmIf you're in need of a fine fantasy, or dozens of them, the Landmark Holidays page at The Landmark Trust is a mighty fine place to spin up a basketful.
Castles certainly hold their appeal, but I find I'm even more charmed by the idea of holding a micro-con at Fort Clonque on Alderney, one of the Channel Islands. It sleeps 13, in rooms spread out throughout the fort so there's ample elbow room. Yes, there's the small matter of getting there. After that, with the full complement of 13, a 4 night stay is a mere £76 quid/person. For our very own fort! That's based on prices a year from now; they vary according to season.
It doesn't appear to come with any cannons. We'd have to bring our own.

Date: 2011-04-01 06:23 am (UTC)Typo now fixed and I found a fort with a cannon!
Crownhill Fort in Plymouth, Devon only sleeps 8 but it's dirt cheap. Better yet, the cannon it comes with is a "Moncrieff Disappearing Gun, the only working example in the world."
Though the overview description for the property does give one pause:
"Since acquiring the Fort in 1987, we have done major work to grounds, weaponry and buildings, many of which are now let to small businesses."
And just what are those small businesses doing with the weaponry? Inquiring minds (and potential renters) want to know.
