1) As of this afternoon, I'm home, sweet home at Toad Woods.

2) As of two nights ago, my mobile service includes texting. Not unlimited, but enough messages/month that it should be hard to run through them. Picture mail, too. Lookit me; I'm caught up all the way to the late-1990s or thereabouts.

3) Those who have seen me hobbling from time to time in recent months will be glad to read that I've finally made a doctor's appointment to get my knee(s), leg(s), and feet looked at. Especially my troublesome right knee. I anticipate some lifestyle changes ahead.

4) My overall reaction to 2011 so far? Where's the Service Counter? Only 7 days into it and I'm long past ready to exchange the year for a sturdier, less-intense model. Seriously.

Here's a funny one for you: I actually now have a small, simple cell phone. It fits in my jeans pocket. It doesn't slide open, it doesn't flip open. It just works. Not many people have the number.

um... 651-315-2250

I got it 15 months ago when my mom broke her hip and my trips to Pittsburgh got more... interactive... or interesting... or complicated... yeah, complicated...

Please take care of yourself. Mobility is a terrible thing to lose...

:-) Welcome home. We'll hope the rest of 2011 is duller than dishwater...at least by comparison with the first week!

Intense year so far. Two aquaintances died in the last two days, and a longtime friend is dying of lung cancer. Jim's uncle has pancreatic cancer, but is doing better than expected just now (which seems to be the best news we have). Getting through piles of Reno work, but still see larger piles coming.

I'm glad you have made that doctor's appointment. And for all the pleasure many of us get from traveling, I'm glad you are home to deal with the knee (and other stuff). I don't think I want to learn to text; things are complicated and busy enough on this end already.

N.

Not many people know this, but on January 15, 1992, the Earth Main Sequence Master Time Clock Authority re-started the year from backup tapes.

If you need some similar service please contact me immediately.

Good wishes for better knees.

I forget if I mentioned it, but my sister and "other brother" gave me a nifty walking stick for Christmas. If it had a hidden sword in it, it'd be way up on the Emma Bull cool scale.

Due to high demand, your brand-new replacement year will be sent to you in approximately 346 days. Please have your receipt ready when delivery is made.

(I suppose here is where I can make some sort of comment about joining the 21st century with regard to your new texting ability, but let's face it, that would be overkill.)

Dear Geri,
Welcome back to your home! :D My mobile phone has bells and whistles I don't use, nor truthfully want to learn to use. At the insistence of a boyfriend I did learn texting and overall didn't care for it - I mean, why do I want to painstakingly use my itty-bitty phone as a keyboard when I have a full console and email. And yes, the Gen X friends had teased me for years about (first in the 1990's) when was I gonna get a pager (um, Minicon, late 70s/early 80's and no thanks) and then the cell phone. When I finally got one, circa 2003, they congratulated me on finally joining the 20th Century, the little whipper-snappers, followed by "too bad it's the 21st [Century]!" *chortle* Nice people; I'm still in touch with most of them. I wish you Luck and Skill and Grace regarding the lifestyle changes you're envisioning. It's great that you can look ahead and plan for it. Love and fannish hugs, John
