My email in box shows I have mail from Dean Pamela. Dean Pamela Whitten, that is.

Pamela Whitten is the Dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University. She sent holiday greetings (with the predictable "and please consider giving us money" appeal). it came complete with a link to a video greeting card that reminded me of the MSU Fight Song in the nicest possible way. It was even useful; a month or so ago I realized I couldn't remember it at all.

The folky, acoustic version sung by a CAS alum adds a lovely patina of nostalgic charm to the University's truly lame Fight Song. The 1915 original had at least a bit more individual character talking about farmers who play football at the beginning before devolving into pap: "Spartan teams are bound to win, They're fighting with a vim! Rah! Rah! Rah!"

The college I think of when I see "Dean Pamela" is Carleton, where DD-B and Pamela were married. Carlton, and Blackstock, of course.

Despite two years of study in East Lansing, I cannot bring the song to mind.

On the other hand, my original (almost literal) alma mater has the greatest fight song of all time.

My baby pictures show me wearing a Notre Dame shirt; I cannot recall a time when I didn't know this song.

My high school fight song is to the same tune as Notre Dame's. I remember the parody better than the actual lyrics we used:

Beer, beer for dear Lakeview High
You bring the whiskey, I'll bring the rye
Send the Freshmen out for gin,
Don't let a sober Sophomore in.

We never stumble, we never fall
We sober up on pure alcohol.
All the loyal faculty
Lie drunk on the barroom floor.

Drink! Drink! Drink!

I'm currently charmed by the St. Olaf Fight Song, which is in 3/4 time:

Alum signing it at a parade in Ballard (presumably the Washington Ballard).

Two prospective students who included it with their application(s).
