Marilee Layman is in the hospital

mjlayman has been hospitalized with what looks like a stroke. The reports I've seen so far indicate it's affecting her ability to communicate, especially communication linked to thinking. A friend from her book group visited her yesterday and wrote: "She says "trick me and I talk good". I can see when she says something without thinking it comes out straight. But when she tries to communicate something requiring forethought it comes out like pig latin.

Marilee is in the Neurological Intensive Care Section of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA. Steve, the book group friend, set up a forum with introductory information, hospital updates, and more. Steve also coordinated with the neighbors, one of whom is taking care of her cats. Kudos to Steve.

Before she went into the hospital, Marilee posted on LJ about what she called cluster headaches last weekend and the medical treatment and tests she received then, so there's some more direct background info there.

malibrarian pointed out on the forum that Marilee's birthday is this coming Tuesday. Steve is putting together a large card from birthday and get well messages posted to an area he set up there.

Scary times. All good thoughts for a satisfactory recovery. Preferably an easy one, too, much as I know better than to expect that.

You're welcome. Alas, I haven't seen Marilee for a few years now, and don't have a sense of when I'm likely to see her next. My travels are so limited that she's made it to Minicon more regularly in the past 5 years than I have.

I saw her yesterday afternoon. She was mostly sleeping. Well wishes are pouring in from scores of people, so I gave her the general "everyone you know online is sending you wellwishes" and will try to be more specific next time I see her if she's more alert.

Her birthday is Tuesday. Steve on the special Marilee forum (http://tenuousnet.myfastforum.org/forum1.php) is collecting birthday wishes to print out and deliver to her.
