Friends of NQP might want to know that Target has toddler flannel PJs with moons, stars, and, yep, just like the subject line claimed, sock monkeys!

The microfleece robe is out of stock, and he's long outgrown the sock monkey rock band pjs, but those moon & stars sock monkey PJs? Cute!

Friends of GFS will be happy to hear that she resisted the buying temptation herself. 'Twasn't easy, but doing so was important and I'm glad I managed to walk out of the store without them. I also resisted the grown-up flannel PJs with Santa's helper sock monkeys. If they'd had grown up moon & stars sock monkeys, I would have been lost. Totally lost.

Damn! There are some things I should Just Not Google.

Okay, [livejournal.com profile] guppiecat, I'm going with the 24-hour rule at the very least. I may end up using Christmas $$$ from Daddy to get these, but I'm not doing so tonight. Many thanks for suggesting a 24-hour hold rule for unplanned online purchases.

I'm also starting an impulse list, just to keep track of them. That served me particularly well during the run up to Boskone this past February, and from the looks of it, I think it will serve me well through the holidays to write down impulses as I have them and note the outcome (as in, what I do in response to the impulse).

I count eight impulses in the last five days. Ah, yup. 'Tis the season, all right. So far, I believe I have acted appropriately on all of them -- I pounced on two unexpected opportunities to do things of vital importance to me that wouldn't have otherwise been achieved/accomplished. (And, yes, apologies for being obscure and all, but I do believe I have "vital" correctly calibrated in these two cases -- one went the core of my being able to deliver on client projects and thereby continue generating income, the other -- a much smaller matter, involving a few very pleasant hours and about $6 in gas -- went to the core of what it means to be a friend.)

I acted on another impulse that seemed to be and still looks like a reasonable solution to a dilemma. Of the remaining five impulses, I scaled one back from beyond my capabilities to something I could manage the day after I had it, and passed on the other four.

Most of these impulses were in response to situations that actually built up over a number of days, weeks, and months -- it was just this week when solutions started presenting themselves. Then again, the swing on a star sock monkey PJs are pure, unadulterated impulse in either case (gift for Nico, gift for me). Those are more important to resist...or at least stop and think through, preferably with the object of the impulse out of eyesight. And so it will be.

Onward.

You rock.

Do you and [livejournal.com profile] buttonlass have matching sets? Not that you need the temptation, either, but they're $5 off right now....

And, yes, I want to see the family picture of that! It could be your electronic holiday card.

Here we go...

Perfect!

Now that was serendipitous on the timing, wasn't it? Words can't begin to express my amusement and delight. If you hear several chuckles and guffaws while standing beneath the night sky, they'e the ones traveling at the speed of sound all the way from Massachusetts. I laughed for longer than two minutes, so they probably made it.

Nico, you have the best parents!

And the best LaLa, too! But it was Nico's parents who immediately snapped and posted the evidence.

You're all the best, and I love you bunches and bunches.

Thanks for the details of your Impulse Control System -- I really ought to initiate something like that, although I don't want to rush into it /i/m/p/u/l/s/i/v/e/l/y/ too quickly.

There's a Target in the same small shopping-center as the supermarket I often get groceries at after a morning at the Community Gardens, and yesterday ... well... yes, I got yet another crank flashlight (comments on the appropriateness of this term will be ignored) to add to what promises to become A Collection. (I have some concern or suspicion that the weak point in all these rechargeable flashlights is battery-life, but only time will tell -- one Radio Shack plug-in-the-wall-socket type has died after only about ten years. Still, at $5 it's well within The Budget.) But yeah, I don't want to make dropping in to Target a habit.

Mind you, when I feel a Need to do some Impulse Shopping, the local 99-cent stores (some of which have added a slight surcharge, or a section of somewhat-higher-priced items -- Inflation takes its toll) have proven to be the safest haven, and some of the items are actually worth the price. And hey, how could I resist a 3-pack of the standard disposable cigarette-lighters with built-in bottle-openers?

Astonishingly, I only bought myself one thing while Christmas shopping this year: a stuffed gangene bacterium.

Speaking of things one should not Google, don't look up gangrene on Wikipedia if you're eating. Or on a full stomach. or any time, really.

But seriously, the systems of impulse control sound very good.
