Jeff Orth, from the Kansas City bid, told me in Skype chat this morning that the 2009 Worldcon will be held in Montreal.

He wrote that the mail-in ballot was 221 - 227, without indicating which bid had which vote count at that point. He then said the onsite vote was brutal, that KC lost the Tourist/International vote.

According to Jeff, the final vote count was 341 KC and 507 Montreal, with a total of 901 votes cast.

This is obviously unofficial until it's announced at Sunday's business meeting, and it's subject to the usual issues of typos in chat conversations, so there might well be differences in the actual vote count. But the result itself? I'm confident it's spot-on.

Congratulations, Montreal. Commisserations to all of my dear friends on the KC bid. You really did score big on the "get out of jail free" front, but I totally understand that there's a lot of grieving to go along with that. My thanks to all of the bidders for running such friendly, positive campaigns!

Thank you!

I owe you Segway pictures! Do you have a preferred email account or ftp site I should use? Or, if you like, I can upload high res images to my LJ scrapbook for a week or so, and you can download them from there. Let me know. Thanks!

And the KC bid goes on the list as another bit of collateral damage in the War on Tourism. If I were choosing between dealing with either US or Canadian border formalities, I'd make the same call.

The way things are going I'm beginning to wonder if American bids in general won't have an uphill slog to win against any halfway competent foreign bid. Not that I'd go to Worldcon if it were held anywhere but in a 650 mile circle centered on Denver (right now I'm down on air travel), or if it were in Minneapolis (I like fandom there enough to travel by air). So in the end it does not matter to me personally since the only place that is likely to bid again soon is Kansas City.

That's kind of a given -- US bids have always had an uphill slog next to any other country. Just because the US dominates in total bids, any foreign bid has a leg up. How many times does anyone want to go to Boston or LA?

You can see pictures of it tomorrow. Alas, to the best of my knowledge, Ultraman doesn't consider getting the Hugo to me by Sunday afternoon to be a "dire emergency," so he's not using teleportation to move it from Japan to Toad Woods in an instant. Fair enough; I'll wait. Eagerly.

Definitely, Congratulations to the Montreal folks; I'm putting the final touches on Askance #4 this weekend for posting early next week, and I'd like to get the right information.

Meanwhile, here is a massive HUG for you! Congratulations on the Fan Hugo for SF5Y. Just you wait until I see you in Vegas next year...

I thought there might be a PR 0.1 available, seeing that Yokohama is 13 hours ahead of Toronto. it is currently 9am Sunday there.

I'd have to make up details about guests, and the bulk of what I know about the hotel situation is what the Montreal bid put in their filing papers.

The letterhead says "Delta Centre-Ville" and the letter says it's two blocks from the Palais des Congres with inside access. The quoted room rate was a high $169 single/double for 450 rooms, though I also learned at Midwestcon that the bid obtained a price reduction since filing, and that they were in negotiations with other hotels for the additional rooms they'll certainly need.

I'll be in Montreal for the first time next weekend. I'm going up to Jo Walton's Farthing Party 2007. Curiously enough, I'll be staying at Rene's apartment, only he won't be there, so I won't get any direct news from him then. It turns out he lives in the building next to Jo's, and offered his place for her to use as needed. And that's what made it possible for me to go up at all in light of my current financial and cash flow situation.

Oh, dear. I owe him one. That could be dangerous!

The Delta Centre-Ville is where the World Fantasy Convention was held in Montreal in 2001. Yvonne and I ran the little Green Room they provided for panelists. The hotel itself was big enough for the WFC, and should provide some cavernous function space to supplement the Palais. I've never been to the Palais, but it should be big enough to satisfy Worldcon.

Ditto what Jerry said. Wonderful for you and Randy, and something to remember LeeH by.
