Watching and Waiting...

Susan, Gavi, and I are watching and listening to the news of the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis. sfrose called an hour ago to make sure I knew. (I didn't; many thanks for the call!) I just got off from a call from carnyjack, who'd just seen the news himself and was calling for the same reason Sharon did. (Separate welcome post to follow after dinner on that one.)

Susan was on her phone talking with fredcritter when Sharon's call came in, so we knew he was fine. I placed a couple of quick phone calls, leaving messages in both cases. Another call didn't go through, reminding me that calling into the area really isn't helping the over-taxed phone network. Still, I'll be much happier when I've heard that more people are okay.

On that front, many thanks to all who are checking in with the Minn-stf LJ community to let us all know you're okay.

My sympathies go out to the family and friends of those who lost their lives, the toll of which is just starting to be known. Likewise, I send best wishes for full recoveries to all who were injured in the bridge collapse, much as I know how unlikely that is. And my thanks go out to all of the rescue workers and health care workers busting their butts to minimize the damage right now.

Ye gads, this is going to screw up Twin Cities traffic for a long time to come.

It was a staggering thing to have happen out of the blue. I'm praying the toll doesn't go higher...and thankful that it happened in the summer, not in a Minnesota winter.

Margo Bratton was going across the Cedar Avenue Bridge (a couple of hundred feet downriver) either as or very shortly after the collapse.

In fact, Adam and crew (plus John Sjogren & girlfriend) were already on a plane to Scotland. Whew!
