The wireless world continues to expand. I'm at the Lansing Toyota dealership, getting my car as ready as I can for the drive home. It needed an oil change before I left Massachusetts....

They don't have an express service set-up here, but did promise to get me on the road quickly and pointed me at the free coffee in the lounge while waiting. Free coffee, hell. There's free wireless. And work tables. Excellent. Given the freezing rain outside, I'm in no rush. Much though I do hope to end up a few hours down the road toward home yet today.

Glad you have found car-repair nirvana. After your experience at the hospice (hospital?), I was all psyched to be able to do some work while waiting through my brother's upcoming 5+ hour surgery. Unfortunately, a call to the medical center revealed that they have no Internet access at all. OTOH, the free wireless connection at the motel nearby has been very reliable.

My car dealership has computers available for the customer's use. Unfortunately, they have the same restrictions on access for those machines as they do for the employees, so no access to LJ, etc.

Yes, both Sparrow Hospital and Hospice House of Mid-Michigan spoiled me with their free, public wireless network. (Hospice House is in a wing of the St. Lawrence Campus of Sparrow Hospital, so the network was the same as at the downtown hospital.)

If you have the chance, do reality check the answer the medical center gave you. The employees at Sparrow Hospital knew wireless was coming, but only one of the dozens of people I talked with knew that it was active. The employees at Hospice House didn't know about the public wireless -- I found out from the sons of another patient there! And there weren't antennas in the hallway like at the hospital, so I wouldn't have thought to check after I was told it wasn't there.

Since I was traveling, I had my computer with me and wouldn't have left it in the car regardless. But I certainly didn't expect anywhere near than much productivity while I waited. Win-win.

Safe drive so far. The roads started getting snow'n'ice interesting around Cleveland, so I bailed for a discount rate at yet another Comfort Inn. I'm going to stick around here for an extra day. The idea is to sleep in, work, and maybe even go to the Cleveland Zoo and Rainforest. An hour or two in a rainforest sounds pretty good right now.

Luckily the latest snow storm was once again, much ado about nothing much. Even in your neck of the woods it shouldn't have been more than 3 inches. Drive home safely!
