Living in the Future

Today's first "Life in the Future" moment came thanks to [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll who linked to light emitting fabric, which is just too cool for words. Sure, it's $300/yard now, but laser printers cost $3,000 when I first started buying them and now they're $80 after rebate at Staples. I can hardly wait for Luminex to show up at S.R Harris and other deep discounters.

To balance out the sublime with the absurd, there's the spam spelling contest of the day winner:

"Drae attglobal.net Mbmeer,

We must chekc taht yoru attglobal.net ID was reretsiged by rela pelpoe. So, to hlep attglobal.net pretnev atamotued
registratiosn, pleesa cilck on tsih lnik and complete cdoe verifitacion prosecs:

[toxic link deleted]

Tahnk you."

Oh, yeah, like I'm going to think that's credible. I just can't figure out how the letter-scrambler missed we, must, was, by, so, to, on, complete, and, and you. That, and I can only get "cdoe" to resolve to "coed" and "code". I suppose "code" could make sense....

Onward.

First time I saw that fabric it was $1500/yard and no one had figured out how to sew with it.

I consider this progress to be fantastic news!

Toni Lay picked up a yard of it and used it for an exhibition piece at Costume-Con 21 in Chicago (spring 2003).

You're not going to see it at Harris anytime soon. It's from an Italian company (http://www.luminex.it) and the US importer (http://www.zuzka.com) has an exclusive contract with the manufacturer. It's woven from plastic fiber-optic and lit with LED modules at the selvedge.

It's pretty tricky to actually use in clothing; there are some major rules on how you can cut the fabric without hosing up the ability to glow.

Okay, so that is awsome

I have an elaborate multicolored costume planned for a year or two. Here's hoping this fabric is cheap enough by then. Wow.

Pretty expensive. Maybe possible buy just enough to make scary superhero mask with. Old one vaporized.

Spammers who want to sell you Viagra (yes, you: Viagra) often misspell key words deliberately to get past word-based spam filters. That this is not likely to increase one's confidence in the seller's bonafides doesn't matter as long as there's a few gullible buffoons out there.

Perhaps the attglobal spammer is operating on the same principle.
