I heard the coffee grinder go off at 7:30 am, right when [livejournal.com profile] debgeisler told me she'd set it. Came downstairs 11 minutes later and poured myself a cup of very dry coffee. AKA air.

Hmmm. Hadn't really noticed, but I thought there'd been a light on when I removed the insulated carafe. No light when I put in back. It's a high-tech coffee maker, one I haven't used before except to pour coffee from. I push the "On" button. The grinder starts up. I hit "Off" -- I know it already ground the coffee. I pushed a likely button on the side; out popped the filter basket. It was full of warm, freshly ground coffee. Dry coffee.

It took a few moments longer to push the button on top correctly, so the water hatch opened. Empty, as I expected. Fill carafe, pour into likely receptacle, replace top...peer at it a bunch to figure out how the coffee gets in. Look at buttons on front -- push "Grind Off." Then push "On."

A few moments later, I am rewarded with the sound of water gurgling through the innards of the machine. Deb emerges from her and Mike's bedroom a few moments after that. Soon we are drinking coffee, doing the morning thing, and getting ready to go to Gloucester in time for the day's whale watch expedition.

Tech before coffee...sometimes that trick works. Like today.

Gloucester and whales

Nice town and a great excursion. Made the same trip just before N4. Hope you had fun! Oh, and our coffee machine at work is busted, so it's a good thing I'm back on my hot tea, because the hot water machine works fine. Got to have that caffeine.

And hey, I miss you and Deb, but you especially since you could not make it to Interaction. Will I see you at Smofcon?

The plans and details surrounding my journey across the country to Smofcon have been dancing around a fair bit instead of settling down and falling into place with any ease. But I have a membership, and a hotel reservation, and if I can work out the flights without tearing the last of my hair out, I'll probably be there.

My favorite non-starter so far is a flight leaving Hartford with connections in both Detroit and Minneapolis. At the beginning of December. Right. I wouldn't mind getting stuck in Minneapolis on the way back home, but I'd much rather bring snow to you than having it prevent me from getting there at all!

Fingers crossed....

My fingers are crossed too, for both of us.

I seem to have at least two and maybe three email addresses for you, and don't know which are current/preferred for non-list correspondence. Please drop me a note in email to the usual address. It's in my LJ profile if it's gone missing from your records.

Thanks!

YOU WIN

I understand WHY someone would design a coffee pot that takes that much skill, because you would set it the evening before. To have had to figure it out in the MORNING before coffee is a sign of GENIUS.

Congratulations

Can't tell if it has water in it without opening. Button on top that needs to be pushed correctly. Multiple buttons on the front. Modal behavior for the main button. This is not an easy to use device. Good work for figuring it out while coffee-deprived -- although I get it that you were highly motivated.

Highly motivated...and kind enough not to bang on my bedroom door and say, "Hey, Deb? I know you were wicked tired and stupid last night, but why did you think the water reservoir would fill itself with condensation during the wee hours?"

Very good houseguest. Strongly recommended.
