nkcmike wins the packaging prize!

A mere 1,373 miles of polar vortex weren't enough to overcome the packaging prowess of [livejournal.com profile] nkcmike. He might have been helped along by the naturally high concentration of glucose that keeps the innards of a frog from freezing all winter long, but his feat is no less impressive for that help.

Three layers of tightly-taped bubble wrap, with the bubbles growing ever smaller the further I cut into the treasure nestled in a box of packing peanuts eventually yielded an enormous jar of FROG preserves. While I knew the glass jar couldn't have possibly broken through harsh handling given how securely it was nestled in its box, the closer I got to the jar, the stronger the aroma of figs became. Surely that polar vortex plaguing the nation would have pierced every layer, freezing the preserves and breaking the glass from within?

Not a chance. And that's how I came to enjoy a thick spread of FROG preserves* spread on toast made from the last of my DeCamillo Italian bread for breakfast this morning.

YUM. Thank you, Mike!

* These particular FROG (Fig, Raspberry, Orange, & Ginger) preserves came from Spring Valley Farms in Holland, KY. It's probably a good thing they aren't available in Holland, MA as that Holland is a mere 5 miles from Toad Woods. The last thing I need is this kind of tasty temptation that near at hand!

I'm glad you liked it!

But I must defer your packaging appreciation to the good folks at the UPS store. I asked them to pack it in such a way as to assure it arrived intact and unfrozen.

UPS drivers like to live dangerously and apparently the good folks at the UPS store packing the goods know what they're up against. The package was delivered shortly after noon Tuesday, but the driver didn't come down the driveway like UPS , FedEx, and the post office drivers usually do. Instead, they left the box at the top of the drive, someplace I only see in winter if I'm driving in or out, which I did yesterday...two days and two Very Cold nights later.

Accuweather sez Wales only dropped to 4 degrees Fondly Fahrenheit on Wednesday night; last I knew, they were basing our weather on Worcester's. Weather Underground sez it dropped to -1. When I looked at my deck termometer, it read -5 and that 's in far more protected area than the FROG preserves were.

So, yeah, please pass my appreciation and congratulations on to the remarkable folks at your UPS store the next time you're in. 'Cause if the FROG froze, it thawed out to its expected lively aroma and taste without any signs of having been anything other that comfortably ensconced in its bubble bed for the long journey.

When I heard that the polar vortex was going to arrive about the same time as your pkg, I was kind of concerned about possible freezing.

I should have emailed you. I knew it had been delivered by the tracking.

But, all's well that ends well. You have to pick up the next jar in person here.

That sounds delicious.

It is delicious. Here's [livejournal.com profile] nkcmike's original review.

If you get here before it's gone, I'll gladly share it with you.

Hmmm, a company called "Amish Wedding" makes regular "Old Fashioned" F-R-O-G Jam and also makes "Hoppin'" F-R-O-G Jam with jalapenos added to the mix. Cute, but you can just call me an old fashioned girl. (Several online suppliers seem to sell the stuff; I didn't investigate which ones ship to Manitoba.)

You reminded me of √urguzz. 260 proof (the other 60 are in hyperspace), distilled from six-legged frogs (there's one on the label: "none authentic without this seal")
Until now, when I Googled for an image, I'd just thought it was a German fandom thing. I now know that it's a Perry Rhodan thing, but I don't know which came first. I can attest that it's like drinking barbed wire, though.

This is one of those times I'm utterly delighted to learn from your experience. Thanks to your comment here, I now know I never, ever want to my lips anywhere near the stuff. Much appreciated!
