Mostly quiet right now. A few hours ago the National Weather Service and and the cool interactive chart at Boston.com predicted the winds peaking right now up around 60 mph with gusts to 70. Now the chart shows sustained winds of 46 mph at the peak, which they've pushed back an hour from 3pm to 4pm.

One tree down so far. As far as I can see, anyway. The treetop covers a large portion of the yard beyond the deck, to the left of the well. No damage to any structures, not even near. The trunk extends far into the woods; it was a tall tree. There's an abundance of tiny little branches all over the front yard. And I won't be opening my front door for the rest of the season. When I did so this noontime, I finally noticed the huge, gorgeous paperwasp nest hanging underneath the outdoor lamp mounted to the house. Photos to follow when it's not raining, though they'll probably be up on G+ first (user name gerifsullivan).

Gavi wrote up a short report of her morning's activities. Here 'tis:

11:00—emptied full rain-gauge (5 in. +)

anecdote:
Fruit fly one observed displaying courtship behaviors towards fruit fly two. Fruit fly one follows fruit fly two, moving wing, thus producing song. Fruit fly two avoids fruit fly one, walking away before flying to another part of sink. Fruit fly two later observed displaying same courtship behaviors towards third fruit fly, this time successfully, thereby thoroughly grossing out researcher.

conclusion:
Fruit fly one should really stop hitting on straight guys. Poor thing.
