Watching the news

gerisullivanI checked email and the web one final time before going to bed in the wee hours, then spent another hour and change complusively reading and seeing everything I could find about the earthquake off Japan and the tsunami that followed.
Thanks to past experience taking in way too many crises and tragedies in the world, I recognized when I was cycling from the news sites to Twitter to blogs to the earthquake monitoring sites and back to the news sites and the same pieces of video coverage again and again and again. I tore myself away and went to bed.
Six hours of sleep and morning doggie snuggles later, I returned to my computer to learn there had been an additional 55 aftershock quakes of magnitude 5 and higher while I slept. So much for the half-hour break between those and the previous 24.
As I commented on Making Light: "Steady, Earth. Steady."
