My SFContario Schedule
Nov. 17th, 2010 05:16 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
In a little over 24 hours,
fringefaan will marvel at just how much c/r/a/p/ Much Needed Stuff can be jammed into my car. We'll take our seats, set the needle at 500, and we'll be there in an hour...ummm...we'll head west to Troy, and then on to Toronto for Author GoH Michael Swanwick's reading at the Merril and other festivities. Right. That's the ticket.
Friday afternoon will likely be filled with Pat Virzi's arrival, searching out the cookie outlet for the one and only plant in the world where Mallomars are made, much though I don't expect to find any Mallomars there, and discovering just how much damage I can do picking up yummy Canadian microbrews to further fill out the rather astonishing line-up that currently fills the back end of my car. Luggage? What luggage? Certainly we can do without luggage when there's bheer filling the car. Bheer, fanzines, toys, party supplies, and a bunch of stuff I've no doubt forgotten already. Thank goodness I'm not flying. Those 56 batteries would probably worry any number of TSA folks, especially if they took note of the toys those batteries are destined for. No, not those kind of toys....
I do believe I've nattered my way pretty much to the start of my fun bits on the SFContario program:
Fri. 7 PM – Ballroom BC Opening Ceremonies
Yay! Welcome to SFContario, everyone!
Fri. 11 PM – Ballroom A E-pubbing Your Ish
Are the days of cranking out fanzines on Gestetner, Mimeo or Hectographs behind us? Is there any reason for paper copies anymore or are e-readers and efanzine.com the way to go? Come discuss the next generation of fanzines and the technology they’re using. (Colin Hinz, Geri Sullivan(M), Taral Wayne, Pat Virzi)
Sat. 1 PM – Room 207 Kaffeeklatsh
Bring your knitting, bring your bheer if it's allowed, bring your stories. We'll share an easy hour of conversation, maybe some music, fanzine readings, creativity, amusements, and whatever else. Peeps, probably. Maybe sticks. Yeah, probably sticks, too. The purpose of this exercise is to help me remain distracted so I won't fret about wanting to be the perfect interviewer and then some when 2 o'clock rolls around. Kudos to SFContario for a brilliant bit of program scheduling. Thank you,
dlacey!
Sat. 2 PM – Ballroom BC Editor GOH interview
Which is the greater challenge, interviewing someone who knocks your socks off both professionally and personally, or interviewing a dear friend of a quire's worth of years and counting? What about when they're both the same person? I'm honored to be interviewing SFContario Editor GOH Teresa Nielsen Hayden. Seriously, and all the way down. I won't know what aspects and inclinations of her career and life our conversation will best illuminate, but it's certain to be heartfelt, rich in detail, and even richer in insight. Teresa always is.
Sat. 6 PM – Room 207 An introduction to fanzines.
What makes a good fanzine? What kind of writing works and why? Panelists will read from and discuss the best of the best. (Randy Byers, Lloyd Penney, Geri Sullivan, Pat Virzi(M),
Taral Wayne)
Sat. 10 PM -- All Worldcons, All the Time Bheer Tasting.
Hosted by Renovation, Chicon 7, and26 Worldcons and Worldcon Bids past, present, and future! A remarkable selection of microbrews and imports, something like a half-dozen kinds of ginger bheer plus root bheer, spruce bheer, and birch bheer (presuming we can lay hands on a bottle or two). Check the party signs and convention newsletter for the room number. We're on the party floor.
Sun. 11 AM – Gardenview "Another fracking panel!"
SF&F Swearwords Invented swear words are a mainstay of genre fiction -- some of them even mean something. Do you prefer made up words or their English equivalents? And is this merely a clever way to get around the censors? A panel where everyone can learn some new words, some you may even want to try out on the boss. (Cheryl Freedman, Violette Malan, Michael Martineck, Caro Soles, Geri
Sullivan(M).)
Sun. 1 PM – Ballroom BC Fan GOH interview
Randy Byers does the honors, and that promises to be a treat, too. Presuming either one of us can form words the afternoon after the night before, that is. Not that an inability to form words has ever stopped me before....
Sun. 3 PM – Ballroom BC Closing Ceremonies
Awwwww....
