Owning up to it

Years ago, I happily wore one of the FOMS ribbons [livejournal.com profile] tammylc was handing out. When in convention mode, my fear of missing something clearly contributes to my tendency to skip sleeping in favor of, well, just about anything. Yes, I know about the 5-2-1 rule. My own application of it is supplemented by [livejournal.com profile] carnyjack's, [livejournal.com profile] drwhuh's, [livejournal.com profile] kaffyr's, and my long-held truth: Food is Sleep. (Sleep is not food, but food is sleep.)

Today I acknowledge that it's not just conventions. FOMS is one of my core traits; it's who I am.

And that's why I'm up and ready to head to the Metro at such an unlikely hour. The hotel I'm meeting [livejournal.com profile] debgeisler, [livejournal.com profile] benveniste, and [livejournal.com profile] smofbabe across the street from the Library of Congress Manuscript Reading Room. I can easily spend another 60-90 minutes reading letters sent to Ephraim George Squier 150 years ago before I join them for the day's main event, the Rally to Restore Sanity (and/or Fear).

I'm so there. Luckily, it's in person rather than watching it live on the intertubes starting at noon.

The schedule.

A lovely day for a rally! I'll wander down (I live in the city) later this morning.

What's a FOMS ribbon?

What part of the Mall is the rally? For the March last year we were on the...west side of the Capitol (the one facking* the Mall). I'd never been that close to the Capitol buildingn, and loved how it looked like a mound of butter cream frosting.

FOMS = Fear Of Missing Something

The stage was set up at 3rd Street West so the Capitol was directly behind it. We were between 4th and 5th Street West, somewhat more south than north, but fairly near the center. The rally stretched back to 7th Street officially and overflowed that space.

Thanks for the info!

Sounds like the main stage for both rallies were set up in the same space.

I was pretty close to the front for mine, and really don't know how much we filled the Mall. (There was also a breast cancer marathon rally on the opposite end by the Lincoln Memorial.)

A few days ago I caught footage of the March on Washington in '63, was...thrilled, is guess is the best word, to think that I'd gotten to do my version of the same.

I was quite amused to come downstairs to make sure you were awake but you were already gone.

Grin. I didn't make it to the Manuscript Reading Room, but it's a good thing I left when I did. People coming in later took an hour and more longer to get there.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your hospitality! Staying with you and Pooch is magnifying my considerable delight in the time here.

FOMS? Foundation of Open Media Software?

The more Fannish "Fear Of Missing Something", actually, and -- at Conventions -- a feeling I know only too well. (For me, it seems to combine with "Hey! I'm a Grown-Up now, and can stay up all night if I want to", and "This exhaustion/sleep-deprivation psychotropism is fascinating". Or it did until about a decade ago, when my body decided that it was going to get at least six hours of sleep out of every 24 hours, no matter what. Nowadays, most Cons seem to have at least a 6-hour block in which nothing much is Happening, either Officially or Unofficially, which is fortunate for me, though (IMHO) less-so for younger-generation fans. )

The rally looked great on tv. I hope you had a great time.

I figured out "FOMS" but what's the 5-2-1 rule?

Also, glad someone went to the Rally to Restore Sanity! Fringefaan made it to Seattle's satellite.

the 5-2-1 rule: At least five hours of sleep, two meals, and one shower per 24 hour period.

D'oh! I should know that!

Sorry I never found you guys. I was also on the West side or the Capitol side behind the stage. I tried to get on the Mall three times but it was just too crowded for me.
