12 pounder smoothbore?

No, the bore is too small. It looks almost like a 3" rifle but those were cast iron not bronze. My guess is an old six pounder circa the War 1812 that was brought out of retirement for the Civil War.

The sign says it was a gift from the Federal Government in 1851. If it had been used in the War of 1812, I'm surprised the sign didn't mention that, too.

There were (& are) Civil War artillery fans who maintain & fire replica cannon like this. For type of cannon of a certain interior bore diameter, a non-traditional substitute for a period cylindrical cannon shell is a used beer can filled with concrete. It is low cost, about the right weight & diameter, and works for target practice.

You show in one of your gallery photos that the cannon is aimed at one of the 2 hotel elevators. You have the start of a plot for a regional murder mystery. I'm not sure if that would count as a 'cozy' mystery.

The mystery would have to involve the bheer cans coming from the bheer can Tower to the Moon, or some sort of contretemps between the Tower Builders and the cannon munitions team.

As a fellow northerner I fear for your safety. Please evacuate the area. We'll send reinforcements.:)

I suppose some Regulars always exit the (appropriate) elevator with their hands upraised in token of surrender, in expectation of humane treatment -- a convention once honored by the U.S. Federal Government, as well as by the Confederacy (more-or-less, give or take Andersonville).

Other than the need to remove the grocer's apostrophe from "1850's" and capitalizing "confederate," a very informative sign. You can take care of that while you're there, right?

I'd raise the issue of whose balls were commencing (and what the cannon had to do with that), but I'm not that kind of person.

Stop laughing.

Grin!

Then there's that initial cap "K" on "In Keeping with..." at the beginning.

Hmmm....I once received a complimentary dessert for pointing out the typos on the menu at the first Rainforest Cafe a few weeks after they opened. I could easily have Too Much Fun correcting signage, menus, billboards, and other typography in the wild...and sending an invoice to the appropriate party.
