On Friday, May 14, 2004, I got up early and drove from [livejournal.com profile] debgeisler and [livejournal.com profile] benveniste's home in Middleton to Country Bank in Brimfield. I allowed an extra half-hour for morning traffic into the Brimfield Antiques Show, but was still running most of 15 minutes late. Luckily, it didn't take the bank long to prepare the cashier's check I needed for that afternoon. I was soon on my way south on Route 19, headed to the property that would become Toad Woods in just a few more hours.

The final pre-purchase inspection went reasonably smoothly. My Realtor and I headed to the courthouse in Springfield where we met up with my lawyer, the seller's lawyer, and the closer. My lawyer then filed the deed with the courthouse and Toad Woods was officially mine. Well, mine and the mortgage company's.

The futon I'd ordered wasn't in yet. The bunk bed store sent me away with a plastic encased loaner mattress...a youth mattress that was the most uncomfortable mattress I ever remember sleeping on. Before the weekend was over, I'd bought an inflata-bed. That proved to be a superior solution and I kept sleeping on it until my furniture was delivered a few weeks later.

Saturday morning, less than 24 hours after closing, the Charter Guy was here to install my high-speed internet. Here are the first two posts from Toad Woods.

I still like it here. Even more than I did then, which reflects the core fact of the matter: while the last five years have been far from easy, they have been good.

Now if I could just get around to unpacking the last of the boxes...

I think we still have boxes that never got unpacked when we moved into this house.

We bought it in January 1996.

We moved house in

July 2001, then decided to start a Worldcon bid. (bought house in May, did work on it and painted-windows, new kitchen--we got an obscene amount for the house Dr P and I had owned in Prairie Village and only owed about $32,000 on it).

We do have boxes we haven't looked in, but we're pretty much picked up and have a living room and dining room (well, the latter after Conquest, right now it has all the NAKACon leftovers including a lot and a lot of pop cases/12 packs/etc.

We did suffer from a bright idea that the living room could be two spaces when it is Just a Bit Too Small for that. That was rectified before the party In April, and I'm pretty happy with all but the parlor now.

But now I need to find some money making work so we can buy a bigger TV. Whatever.

Go you!

Happy Anniversary (well, it still is the 14th in this time zone).

May you live there as long as you enjoy it, and may you enjoy it as long as you live there. Or something like that.

We still have a few boxes out in the garage that haven't been unpacked since Maryland. We left Maryland in 1990.

Congratulations on your five year anniversary!

R and I loved Toad Woods. I thought she, a city girl, and a wary one at that, might be nervous out there in the Big Dark, but no. I'm so glad for you that you found it!
