Results from today's Worldcon Business Meeting

katsudon posted a play-by-play report of today's Preliminary Business Meeting at LoneStarCon 3. Wow, they cranked through a lot in 100 minutes!

Notable outcomes:

Milt Steven's motion (seconded by Linda Deneroff) to abolish the Hugos for Best Fanzine, Best Fan Writer, and Best Fan Artist didn't survive an Object to Consideration; it's off tomorrow's meeting agenda.

Eemeli Aro's motion (seconded by James Bacon, John Coxen, and Jesi Pershing) to add a Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Length lost its OTC vote. (It would have added a category for dramatic presentations under 15 minutes in length.)

The YA Hugo motion was withdrawn, but there was an objection to that so it stayed on the agenda long enough to lose its OTC vote. The meeting did decide to set up a committee to study the YA Hugo issue.

There were several votes about extending Hugo eligibility of various works both past and present. I'm not confident that I understand the outcomes clearly enough to summarize them here; please read katsudon's report for the specifics. (I think I have it, but if the various votes affect each other, I might be off.)

Lots of debate tomorrow. I'm enough of a Business Meeting g/l/u/t/t/o/n/ f/o/r/ p/u/n/i/s/h/m/e/n/t/ geek that I hope Lisa Hayes is videotaping them and look forward to kevin_standlee's post of those tapes. But I'm equally glad I'm not actually sitting through the meetings this year. The agenda looked both long and ugly. My congratulations and thanks to those who were there today!

Pre-bid Announcement: Dublin in 2019

I'm happy and proud to be a member of the Away Team backing Dublin's plan to bid for the 2019 Worldcon.

Look for the official bid launch at Loncon 3 and Shamrokon next year, with the vote taking place wherever Worldcon is in 2017. In the meanwhile, though, do check out the Dublin in 2019 website. They've also started up on Facebook and Twitter.
