Dear Readers:

Many thanks for all of the useful tips, advice, and experience with portable GPS units. I ordered the TomTom XXL 540TM last night. Yes, it's a TomTom and I'm on a Mac. Thanks to advice and info from [livejournal.com profile] madfilkentist and [livejournal.com profile] drplokta, I'll be sure to make back-ups before doing updates, pay attention to which operating system the unit seems to want, and go bravely forward in what I hope proves to be a sensible way.

I decided against the spiffier TomTom LIVE and GO models in order to stick with my "one-time expense" requirement for any model purchased.

Luck was on my side when I placed my order. I was debating whether to buy it online or at the Staples store in Sturbridge when I clicked through to Amazon to check some last little bit of technical information and what folks said about it in reviews. Instead of listing the same price as Staples (as it was last week), there was one of those "place item in cart to see the price" notifications. Okay. Hey, neat! The price was $40 less than I was expecting to pay. Happy birthday to me.

It's supposed to arrive today. The next week should offer lots of opportunities to see just what it can do and how much fun it is to play with.

Again, thanks! Decision made, action taken, and All That Jazz...

I live in rural Massachusetts, down in a hollow with only a swath of viewable sky from the bottom of my driveway.

My GPS picks up eight, count 'em *8* satellites from that spot.
