To the best of my knowledge, I have not signed up with Facebook.

Today I received an invitation from a friend who has photos on Facebook she wants to share with me. That message mentioned that I would need to join Facebook to see them. I have done nothing in response to that message.

In the next seven hours, I received 13 more messages from Facebook, each one telling me of another person people who has added me as a friend on Facebook and asking me to confirm that I know them.

Can someone who is on Facebook explain why this might be happening? I think I understand the first message, but not the next 13. Yes, I do know all of them, but why are they all adding me to their friends lists? Why do they think I'm there to be added?

The times before that I've looked at Facebook, I've been put off by their user agreement, specifically in terms of the rights they claim to use any content I post anyway they want to. I know some people who are on Facebook but don't post anything meaningful in the way of content there because of the user agreement. I'm the sort who wants to feel free to participate in the forums I belong to, even though I'm already on more than I can meaningfully keep up with. All of which has contributed to my not joining Facebook to date.

Comments? Suggestions? Different perspectives? All are welcome. Thanks!
