Since it's already Wednesday morning in Europe...

From [livejournal.com profile] holyoutlaw, who got it from [livejournal.com profile] rimrunner:

Has the Large Hadron Collider Destroyed the Earth Yet?

"Hit refresh for instant updates. View source (as she said) for extra lulz."

Boston.com ran these gorgeous pictures from CERN at the beginning of August. I didn't read all 2,500+ comments to their post, but that won't stop me from naming #145 the best:

The question is, "will it blend?"

Here's the LHC website. And no mention of it would be complete without also linking to the Large Hadron Rap, by fellow Michigan State University alum (albeit 28 years later): Kate McAlpine.

Happy LHC Wednesday!

Pajama Party at Fermilab!

[livejournal.com profile] beamjockey reports that Fermilab held a pajama party to watch beam go around the Large Hadron Collider for the first time. Yay, Fermilab!

There's even a picture of folks in pjs. Go read all about it.

I love living in the future.

Good Intentions, Day 3

-- Normal housekeeping -- started laundry, tidied kitchen (including doing a few dishes)
-- Put up this year's Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony poster, thereby clearing off spot on the dining table where it was laying flat until it went on the wall.

I then cut non-computer time short since there was a non-zero possibility that email telling me to send a large project to print would be in my inbox. Sure enough, it was. The afternoon then did its usual thing and I'm still behind where I need to be with the day. I did, however, carve out a couple more non-computer chunks of time and managed the following:

-- pulled the 4-foot weeds along the side of the garage. The Black-Eyed Susans look much the better now that the competition is gone.
-- vacuumed basement (though not the basement stairs yet).
-- cooked a real dinner (crab legs, corn, mushrooms). Now noshing on romaine hearts for the missing leafy green. Yum.

Back to the salt mines...and a few more loads of laundry.

AKICOLJ. And the best links are, too.

[livejournal.com profile] flyingsauce put it best, so I'll just quote him:

"For black hole fantasists everywhere. OK I'll shut up now."
