It was a windy day. From the sound of it, it's a windy night, too. A really windy night.

The Weather Channel says winds from the south/southeast, 25 mph gusting to 34.

Accuweather says same direction, 8 mph, with gusts to 12.

Weather Underground says 2 and 9, now 4 and 9, now 13. Gotta say something for real-time reports -- they're updating every 10-12 seconds. It's also the closest location -- Monson. Accuweather is based on Worcester. (Further readings over the last 2 minutes have ranged from 2 to 16.)

Weather.gov has a high wind warning in effect until midnight. -- gusts up to 50 mph.

Thunderstorms coming, too.

It's a good night to be inside. I'm glad I am.

Here comes another one of those gusts....

Stay warm. We're supposed to be getting high winds tomorrow, and we did get some last night; I love hearing the wind, and sometimes walking in it, but only because I know I have someplace comfy to which I can return.

One of the coolest windy nights I ever experienced was in a cabin on the north shore of Lake Superior. Not only was there wind, which is cool in itself, but it made the waves crash on the rocks in really spectacular fashion.

Recommended music for the occasion: "Windy Nights" on Shawn Colvin's delightful _Holiday Songs and Lullabies_ CD.

It was windy and rainy here tonight and some of us went out to dinner after bookgroup. On the way home, when I turned west, it was like there was a magic land in front of me. There was the deep deep dark cloud cover above until maybe 10 miles west where the setting sun made the sky blue and pink. It felt like the cloud cover was a roof and I could just step out into the blue-pink land.

Oops! That last gust took down the electric lines supplying Toad Woods, eh? Candlelight is pleasant.

And I'm so old-fashioned as to not realize, until after that was written, that you might well have a battery-powered computer and phone, so a power outage would not affect you until the batteries need recharging. Which reminds me that it's about time to put the flashlight out in the sun to recharge, tomorrow -- it was getting a bit weak when I chased after a marauding possum a few minutes ago -- and that I want to shop for an all-purpose solar-powered battery-charger.

Curiously enough, the electricity did fail, but only momentarily. It was back in less than a minute. That's the norm around here, a fact that always surprises me given how much power outages tend to last down at Joe and Edie's. They're in Westchester County, in a far less rural area than I'm in.

But you're right -- now only is my laptop battery-powered, all of my vital computer equipment, including the cable modem, is on the UPS back-up power supply.

Power does go out for several hours upon occasion. I have flashlights scattered throughout the house, tucked into various places I'm likely to need them. The best is one of those wind-up models.

And after the wind died down and the lightning stopped, we got BB-sized hail. Now I'm inside, where it's dry and comfy.
