Another rocket (a different rocket)
Sep. 2nd, 2008 02:11 amOn the theory that it's not tomorrow until I go to sleep and wake up again, I declare that it is still September 1, 2008, and I'm here to write about the adventures of my day.
A year ago today, Science-Fiction Five-Yearly won its very own rocket. 'Twas a huge thrill, and an honor of similar magnitude. GoshWow, you bet.
Today, very temporarily free of deadline pressures or the need to be anywhere in specific, I celebrated the anniversary (and the American Labor Day) by doing something I first tried to do 20 years ago. I rode the Staten Island Ferry. For good measure, I went to Coney Island, too.
And that's how it is that I ate frog legs from the original Nathan's, saw a large jellyfish in the wild, and shot my own photos (not these) of the Astroland Rocket. Here's another shot. Thanks to the ferry ride, I saw 3 of the 4 New York City Waterfalls and learned from Staten Island natives that they're going to cut the hours that the waterfalls are on after today, because the salty mist is apparently destroying trees, shrubs, and plants on the Brooklyn Promenade. Oops.
I didn't see any food on a stick while I strolled down the Coney Island Boardwalk, but being there was as good a substitute as one can get when one is 1200 miles east of the Minnesota State Fair. The funhouse mirrors at the Coney Island Museum were worth the 99ยข admission all by themselves. If you go to the museum, be sure to get the warning about the peep show so you can decide whether or not you want to watch it. It's not your usual peep show, though it is electrifying.
For the record, "Souvenir of Coney Island Salt Water Taffy" is made in Revere, Massachusetts.
With luck, I'll have a few photos to post, but that will wait for another day. The drive home was long and now that I've spent a couple of hours unwinding and catching up on various things, I'm looking forward to sleeping soon.
Here's hoping your September is off to a good start, too, despite all of life's harsh realities as they are currently playing themselves out. (Minnesotans, hang in there, okay? Likewise everyone within range of Gustav. I'll do my best to do the same.)
