Bring Warm Clothes is a book about Minnesota history by Peg Meier that was published in 1981, two years after I moved to Minneapolis. It's not supposed to be packing advice for a brief, Spring weekend trip four years after I moved away.

I was concerned earlier today when I read [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr's LJ post and saw that 2-4 inches of snow were predicted by Friday, the day I'm flying in. I've been gifted with a trip to Applecon and I'm really looking forward to a weekend of music, a weekend of fun times with Gavi and dozens of other friends and loved ones.

I am not looking forward to a weekend of snow. Okay, 3-4 inches wouldn't be that bad. I'd have to pack mittens, sure, and take my winter jacket, but I can slog through 3-4 inches of snow in my walking shoes.

Only now the forecast calls for 9.2 inches of heavy, dreaded white stuff between Thursday and Saturday. Nine. Point. Two. Inches.

It would be fair play if I'd moved somewhere tropical, somewhere it never snows. But I didn't. I moved to Massachusetts. Here in Massachusetts, we know plenty damned well what 9.2 inches of snow looks and feels like. Minnesota does not need to remind me. Not. Not. Not.

I've taken my boots back out of the closet. They spend the winter in the mudroom entrance, where they're at hand and easy to put on. I put them in the closet a week or two ago, when it was clear I wouldn't be wearing them here until November, or perhaps even later.

The boots are confused, and grouchy from having been woken from their long 3-season snooze. I don't blame them.

I'm still looking forward to Applecon!

9.2? How did they get that specific? Is the forecast converted from centimeters or something?

It's the Accuweather Weather Alarm total, though they're not specific on how the various ranges of 3-6", 1-3", and so on add up that precise a figure.

9.2 inches sounds dreadful... and odd... it was a beautiful sunny and warm day here. Kids were riding their bikes and running around in t-shirts... ok only one of my kids was running around in a t-shirt and I think he regrets it but still it was warm.

The daytime forcasts for Winnipeg are all above 0 C... anywhere from 5 to 12 C between now and the end of the weekend. I am croggled at the thought of you having that type of weather while we are into warm spring weather a 7.5 hour drive NNW of the Twin Cities. Are you certain someone isn't pulling your leg?

Mother Nature is pulling everybody's leg.

The Weather Underground forecast shows the potential for total snowfall to be even worse:

Thursday
Breezy. Snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulation 1 to 2 inches. Highs 35 to 40. East winds 10 to 15 mph shifting to the northeast 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night
Breezy...snow. Areas of blowing and drifting snow. Snow accumulation of 3 to 4 inches. Lows around 30. Northeast winds 20 to 25 mph.

Friday
Snow. Areas of blowing and drifting snow. Snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches. Highs around 35. Northeast winds around 20 mph.

That's 8-12" total...with the probabilities of snow on Friday night and Saturday at 70% and 40% respectively, though no further accumulation forecast.

Dreadful. I quite agree with you -- it sounds dreadful.

A check to the Environment Canada site adds insult to injury by suggesting we will have a sunny high of 18 C on Monday. That is about 64 f. A decent temperature for this time of year.

My condolences to you and all those heading to Applecon this weekend.

They are saying this morning on MPR (Manysnowta Public Radio to the rest of the world) the the southern portion of the Cities is right on the Rain/Snow line. you might get lucky and just get rained on. I for one, am delighted to see you up here, wet or dry.

"No Comment", I mutter as I head out to check on whether the tomato plants in containers on the back driveway can get by without repotting for a couple of weeks until the soil in the new plot is properly prepared for them. (Mind you, I'm perfectly aware that there are plenty of good reasons for not settling in Southern California, but sometimes I just can't resist Temptation.) But hey, this sudden Additional Snow will be a hassle for only about a week, for you, and you can spend most of the time indoors being cozy with a bunch of friends & interesting people.

Sorry to bother you here, but I was looking up Howard Harrison, and it led me here to you, since you have listed listening to Songs from Lacey's Kitchen.

Just wondering how you acquired the album? Haven't heard from Howard in almost three years, and don't even know if he's still around. Looking for leads, I guess. :(
