On the Merritt Parkway, there's a cell tower pretending to be a tree. (scroll down to the 9th picture on the page) [livejournal.com profile] ybmcu has a running joke about the cell tower standing there stridently proclaiming, "I'm a tree! I'm a tree! Really, I'm a tree!" Only nobody's ever going to believe it -- it's plastic disguise isn't anywhere nearly clever enough, especially considering that it's pretty much three times the height of any real tree for several states in every direction.

All of which is to explain why you'll understand my subject line after taking the video tour of the giant moose they're going to build in northern Sweden. Complete with a concert hall and restaurant inside, each seating 350 people. And five conference rooms that you get to by going down a spiral staircase in the moose's front right leg and then into the belly of the moose.

There's even a fake pine tree involved, this one with an elevator inside, taking you up to the entry point in the moose's mouth. Which leads to the bizarre voiceover in the film: "Inside the mouth, between the teeth and the tonsils, you'll find the reception [area] and gift shop."

For more detail, see this article and the moose's website.

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] bohemiancoast....

Posted with a friendly tip of the moose's rack to Dave Langford, who mentioned it on one of the fannish lists I'm on.

It's not on the Merritt, it's on the Hutchinson River Parkway, just a few miles south and west of where the Hutch turns into the Merritt.

That makes sense. I'm really not clear on where the Hutch becomes the Merritt and where the Merritt becomes the Wilbur Cross.

Ditto that on the Sprain into the Taconic, much as it's better marked. I'm pleased to have finally nailed down which parkway flows into the next one on those two sets.

Which reminds me about what happened in LA back in the 1970's: the trees they planted by the highways died, so they replaced them with plastic trees. Those died too. (Really: the fumes ate the plastic.)

Hi Geri,
I just found out you are on LJ. I love moose and this is a must to go and see as far as I am concerned ;-) Things are going well for Sue and I here in Toronto and the wedding is set for April.

Hugs,
Tom

cunning disguise

It has a cousin in Virginia. Appropriately, it's visible from Fantasy Farm.

(Sorry, smaller version of the photo makes it look too realistic.)

I read about the moose in the WashPost! Around here, the religious south, a lot of cell towers are going in church steeples.
