...Daddy loved making things in the shop at school. He turned aluminum, hammered copper, and more.

My sister Sue included this photo on one of the picture boards she created for display at Daddy's funeral. I wasn't able to spend the time I wanted to looking at them then. They're a treasure! I don't remember ever seeing this picture before, or knowing it existed. (Click for a larger image, and click again for one still larger.)

Daniel Squier Fitzgerald turning a bowl
Daniel Squier Fitzgerald turns a bowl. Daddy working in the school shop, back in his youth. 1930s; age unknown. (Early teens?) If I'm reading the shape correctly, he's quite possibly making the aluminum bowl we still have upstairs.

SO cool! To have that photo plus the object that it documents.

Nice picture. I know my dad made a desk in shop because my family still has it. I think kids are missing out on something kind of cool...

It is special to own something made by someone you love. I have a mahogany smoker stand my dad made before WWII. He was able to afford the wood because of the depression. As it was the $0.50 he spent on the wood probably seemed like a lot of money.

How wonderful. I have a small quilt my mother made, and some ceramics she painted. From Dad it was mostly pictures, but I'm so glad he took them, even the time we three kids stood in the snow on Mt. Hood, freezing in our flip-flops and shorts while he diddled with the light meter.

MY father made a lot of stuff - like radios & TVs and built-in furniture in houses we no longer own. He did make an awesome model railroad controller with tons of switches and lights & a neat throttle - that I still have. I also have some 8mm films which are getting to the point of unrecoverability ( I did one round of digitization, but the one I really want needs frame by frame restoration). And, my brothers and I have the furniture he and my mother bought - they had oretty good taste and its either being used right now or setting around getting collectible. But, no pictures of him making anything.
