Twenty-eight years ago at this time on Easter morn, Steve Sullivan and I drove home following my first all-night music party at Minicon 17. I remarked that most of the people on the road at the time were headed to Easter sunrise services, having been to a few myself in my childhood. And here we were, heading home to sleep after having had our own religious needs met thanks to the music of the night before.
The next year, we went to Minicon 14. Yes, I4. There was indeed a reason the whole funny numbering thing started, but it's far more reflective of Minneapolis fannish sensibilities to just mention that my first five Minicons, attended in consecutive years, were Minicons 17, 14, 19, 18 and 20.
fishbliss took the icon photo at yet another all-night music party at Minicon, many moons after my first but still many, many moons before today. It was quite possibly 1996. If not, within a year one way or the other.
One of the realities of having many homes is that one can't be in all of them at once. For now, at least, it's a one-at-a-time phenomenon. (Who knows what future discoveries and technologies will bring?)
This Easter morn, I'm home at Toad Woods, which means I'm not home at Minicon, or home in Battle Creek, or at any of the remarkable number of fannish homes I have the pleasure and honor of considering mine, albeit without the responsibility of paying to heat them, thank ghu.
And now...it *is* 6:13 a.m. I think I'll go for a brief walk around the yard before finally doing the sensible thing and going to sleep. I saw some crocus blooming a few days ago; I wonder what else the rain has brought up. I doubt the Easter Bunny has left any eggs in the yard, though I remember fondly the Easter Egg Hunts of my childhood at 22 Grand Boulevard. I will enjoy nibbling on the Easter Basket treats that came nestled in the box of yarn my sister sent last week. Chocolate eggs, and a chocolate coconut nest, too. Yum. Thanks, Sue!
Many thanks as well to all who have added so much to the considerable joy of the last 28 years. Long, strange trip, you betcha, and one I hope is far, far from being over. Here's hoping future Easter morns find me back at Minicon, and that at least one of them has me enjoying Eastercon in person at long, long last. Today? Today I savor the comfort and joy of this home and that is a good thing indeed since it's the home I'm at.
